Ah, the sprint.

The raw power of these top end sprinters is incredible.

Hiding in the peleton for all but the last 200 – 300m, these guys are just cruising at around 60 – 70 rpm at an output of around 140 – 160 Watts.

But wind them up, lead em out and let them go sees their peak output ramp up to extraordinary values. Cavendish has been measured up to around 1,600 Watts. At 69 kg, this amounts to a peak power to weight ratio of around 23w/kg, which is high.

Paris - Tours 2007 last

Over the years, there has been some standout sprinters. Arguably, the best sprinters ever to have hit the roads are:

Erik Zabel

You would have heard that the Manx Express passed the century a few days ago. 23 Tour de France, 40 Grand Tour victories (currently sitting in 6th overall)

For a man who was born yesterday (Tuesday) some 28 years ago, he has had an outstanding career on the road.

970990_603893309622418_1764748093_n

His first road victory was only on 2008, so to pass the century in 5 1/2 season. Has the MM hit his prime? I don’t think so. After the debacle over at SKY (he still won 14 races last year off his own back), his new  team is starting to gel, he’s in a good head space at the moment, he’s matured over the years and with good health and good luck, he should become racing’s greatest ever sprinter sometime around 2019 at the ripe age of 34 . Only 91 wins (I think) to go.

His list of races won to date are:

Giro

These guys are absolutely mad.  The Giro is throwing up some spectacular scenery and a raft of foul weather.

The following are some of my favourite photos scoured from the interweb from the last week.

Giro Standings

OK, last week I suggested that the winner will come from one of:

  • Vincenzo Nibali  1st @ 34:19:31
  • Cadel Evans; 2nd @ 0:00:29
  • Robert Gesink; 3rd @ 0:01:15
  • Bradley Wiggins; 4th @ 0:01:16
  • Michele Scarponi 5th @ 0:01:24

Its not rocket science.

Current placings as of Sunday Night were:

1 Vincenzo Nibali 62:02:34
2 Cadel Evans 0:01:26
3 Rigoberto Uran Uran 0:02:46
4 Mauro Santambrogio 0:02:47
5 Michele Scarponi  0:03:53

Unless ther is a major catastrophe for Nibali. all he needs to do is mark Cadel, ride well in the ITT, and it’s his. We know Cadel never says die,

263230_10151371931036886_550676121_n

but it is probably just out of his reach.

Although………………….Stage 19 and 20 on Friday and Saturday this week will possibly be game changing. Broadcast on SBS2, these stages are unmissable.

Tip of the Week – Pedal Stroke for Hill Climbing (inspired by Cycling Inform)

pedal_uphill

Once you start pedalling, lock your core and work on moving those pedals over the top of the stroke, through the stroke and then down through the bottom of the stroke. It’s kind of like as if your’e scraping chewing gum off the bottom of your shoes at the top of their stroke and at the bottom of the stroke.

5126754_f520

To do that well, you need to have your core locked.

When you combine the above that with being seated well on the seat and driving from your hips, you’ll find that you get a match full of fluid and fuller drive and a more efficient pedal stroke when you’re pedalling.

Also check your seat height. You should be able to drop your heels at the botton of the stroke to acheive power as your’e driving through the bottom of the stroke. If your seat is too high, you will be unable to drop your heel when you bottom out, so will not be able to develop that final bit of power at the bottom of the stroke.
